Dip HE / BSc Gastroenterology

The Dip HE / BSc Gastroenterology offered by the University of Hull is available from September of each year, and has pathways which include Endoscopic Practice (either Upper GI (OGD) or Flexible Sigmoidoscopy) or Gastroenterology Care. The previous courses held within the University which covered either Upper GI Endoscopy (ENB A87) or Lower GI Endoscopy (ENB D03) have now been replaced by the new programme which still allows for direct entry into year 3 for registered practitioners.

The programme covers two years of study for the diploma, and three years for the BSc. The pre-existent module 92170 Nursing for Gastro-lntestinal Endoscopy and Related Procedures (Level 5) has also been updated and is now complimented by the addition of a related practice module. These two modules also include all aspects delivered in Gastrointestinal Nursing courses. The inclusion of the module Anatomy and Physiology of the GI Tract adds extra depth to the knowledge and understanding delivered to students.

The pathway for flexible sigmoidoscopy covers all aspects required for the development of a highly skilled, safe and competent practitioner in flexible sigmoidoscopy irrespective of initial background. This programme was developed following the successful pilot of non-medical endoscopy training at a local trust. For registered nurses demonstrating appropriate experience and qualifications, direct entry onto the third year is possible in both Upper GI (OGD) and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy.

The pathway for gastroenterology care welcomes applications from healthcare assistants, clinical support workers and newly qualified staff commencing within the field of gastroenterology, as well as experienced practitioners wishing to extend their role into that of advanced practice.

The pathways available are focused around vocational study, underpinned by theoretical aspects being developed through the use of e-learning and workshops at the University of Hull. Modules with hands on practical training will be primarily undertaken within the workplace of the student, for further information please see practical training.

In addition to the current educational provisions available, the University of Hull is currently developing a Masters level programme, of which further information will be provided once available.
